If anyone ever tells you that going out on Maternity Leave is a seamless process.... ignore them! I'm in the midst of sorting out what type of disability I qualify for (if any), and how long I can stay out on maternity leave. It's all a very crazy and confusing process.
If I had any sick days I could just use those, but since I enjoy my sanity throughout the school year, I take them, and therefore only have a few saved. So it looks like once those are used up, I go on a 28 day non-paid grace period and then disability picks up. Here's the funny part though, disability only pays for 6 weeks (or 30 days) if you have a reg. birth, or 8 weeks (40 days) if you have a c-section (but first you have to go through the 28 day non-paid "grace" period) So basically, I'll receive disability pay for a total of 2 days if I have a regular birth.... have to love a system that supports our American family unit!
The good part is that I can take up to 16 weeks (w/out pay of course) and still be guaranteed my job. That will take me until aprox. end of March, giving time to figure things out.
Just a thought- I wonder what Obamacare will look like.... a grace period of 70 days- so you actually have to pay the gov't to have a child??! ;)
